University of California, Berkeley Public Health Heroes Gala

Dr. Conant was recently named a Public Health Hero by the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. On Wednesday March 21st, 2012, there will be a gala in his honor along with Ms. Mary Robinson the former president of Ireland, who is his co-recipient this year. The event will take place at the Nikko Hotel in San Francisco at 6:30 pm, and will be honoring Dr. Conant “For his lifetime efforts in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS”. To learn more click here.

Innovation in HIV Testing @ The Urban School

As a pilot program and proof of concept, Conant Foundation partnered with the students and administration of The Urban School of San Francisco to create a student-organized, student-run, in-school HIV education and testing program. The pilot program successfully launched on February 11, 2011.

Goals of the Urban program:

Educate the senior class about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, the benefits of regular testing, and discussing STI testing with their physician using a peer-education model.
Test the entire senior class for HIV.
Reduce the fear and stigma associated with HIV testing among high school seniors.
Create an environment of open, honest dialogue among students regarding HIV and STI testing.
Develop leadership, community organizing, project management, logistical scheduling and presentation skills in students.
Create a replicable framework for testing to be implemented at other schools.

Features and Successes of the Urban program:

99% student participation rate from the senior class at The Urban School
Significant interest from students in other grades, faculty and staff
Student hosted HIV/AIDS and testing Q&A forums
Student-created presentation materials
Student-driven testing day scheduling, workflow and logistics
Students were the primary educators of their peers
Physician supervised HIV testing conducted by trained HIV testers
Delayed results to protect student confidentiality

What we learned:

Students can create and implement a sexual health education program tailored to their peers.
Students will take advantage of confidential, in-school testing.
Students are willing and able to make decisions about their sexual health when presented with the opportunity to do so.

Our next steps:

Continue to work with the students at Urban to enhance and expand the program there next year.
Expand the program to two additional Bay Area schools before the end of the school year.
Secure funding for additional expansion.

Legends and Headliners in HIV Medicine

HIV continues to be associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the United States, with approximately 1.2 million Americans currently living with HIV and 56,000 new cases reported annually. Insights from leading experts in the field of HIV research and clinical management will provide an opportunity for HIV health care providers to learn more about this disease and to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to improve outcomes for patients with HIV. Presented in an engaging interactive forum, this program will provide an opportunity for health care providers to learn about a variety of important topics in HIV – current demographics of HIV and special issues related to HIV testing and treatment; earlier initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and its potential risks/benefits; the incorporation of novel HIV agents into the current treatment armamentarium to ensure long-term efficacy and disease management; and critical factors for the aging patient with HIV and how these factors may be addressed.

Once again we would like to thank all of you who visited our booth Sunday October 4th at the Castro Street Fair, and a big thank you to all who volunteered to help us make this event a huge success! We screened over 50 people at the fair and helped spread the word about melanoma, skin cancer, and other health conditions affecting our community!

Again we would like to thank Neutrogena for donating sunscreen in support of our booth. Their generous gift helped many of those attending the fair protect themselves from the damaging effects of the sun!

Free Skin Cancer/Melanoma Screening at Folsom Street Fair a Great Success

Thank you to all who visited our booth Sunday September 27th at the Folsom Street Fair, and a big thank you to all who volunteered to help us make this event a huge success! We screened nearly 100 people at the fair and helped spread the word about melanoma, skin cancer, and other health conditions affecting our community!

Last, but not least, we would like to thank Neutrogena for donating sunscreen in support of our booth. Their generous gift helped many of those attending the fair protect themselves from the damaging effects of the sun!

If you missed our booth at the Folsom Street Fair, we will be at the Castro Street Fair, Sunday October 4th from 11am to 6pm, with screenings from 12 noon to 5pm. Come on down!

Free Melanoma/Skin Cancer Screening Coming to a Street Fair Near You!

The Conant Foundation is happy to announce free melanoma/skin cancer screenings at two of our local street fairs:

Folsom Street Fair- Sunday September 27th, Noon-5pm, (booth V-0729, Folsom Street between 7th and 8th Streets)

Castro Street Fair- Sunday October 4th, Noon-5pm, (booth 18-413)

Stop by our booth for your free screening or to learn about other health related issues facing our community!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a skin cancer screening?
A skin cancer screening is a visual inspection of your skin by a medical professional. No blood work is taken whether it is a public or private screening.

Is the skin cancer screening free of charge?
Yes. Dermatologists volunteer their time to provide skin cancer screenings as a free service through the American Academy of Dermatology.

What areas of my body will be screened for skin cancer?
If the screening is in a private setting, a full-body screening can be provided if you desire. If the screening is in a public setting with very limited privacy, only exposed areas (face, neck, arms, hands, etc.) will be screened/visually inspected for skin cancer.

How long will the screening last?
Screenings take approximately 10 minutes, including completing the paperwork and getting your skin checked. Please note that this is a rapid screening and is not to replace a skin exam with your physician.

Can I ask the medical personnel to look at my skin for other dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, etc?
The screenings are for skin cancer only. Seek advice from your regular dermatologist for other dermatologic concerns. If you do not have a dermatologist, you can locate one in your area by going to Find A Dermatologist or calling the American Academy of Dermatology toll-free at 1-888-462-DERM.
